Planting a **bareroot apple tree** is a rewarding endeavor! Here's a step-by-step guide to help you get started: 1. **Timing**: - Plant your bareroot tree during its **dormant season**, either in **fall** (after leaves drop) or **early spring** (before new growth appears). 2. **Preparation**: - **Unpack the Tree**: Remove all packing materials and carefully untangle the roots. - **Soak the Roots**: Place the roots in water for **3 to 6 hours** to keep them moist. 3. **Site Selection**: - Choose a location with: - **Good Soil**: Worked-up soil (such as a garden bed) is ideal. - **Sun Exposure**: Ensure adequate sunlight. - **Air Flow**: Good air circulation. - **Accessibility**: Easy access for planting and care. 4. **Digging the Hole**: - Dig a hole **wider than necessary** to allow roots to grow outward without crowding. - Turn the soil in an area up to **3 feet in diameter** to aid root growth. 5. **Planting**: - Place the tree in the hole at the same depth it stood in the nursery. - **Do not add soil amendments** (such as peat or bark). - Firmly but not tightly pack the soil around the lower roots. - Construct a **water-holding basin** around the tree. - Water the tree thoroughly. 6. **Mulching**: - Spread protective mulch **2 inches deep** in a **3-foot diameter** area around the base of the tree (avoid touching the trunk). 7. **Watering**: - Keep the soil and mulch **moist but not soggy** during the first year. - Water generously every **7 to 10 days** during dry weather. Remember, proper care during the initial stages will help your bareroot apple tree thrive!
